ABS warning light on
What an illuminated ABS light means for braking, how wheel-speed sensors and tone rings fail, and when normal braking is still available.
An ABS light usually disables anti-lock function, not base braking.
Wheel-speed sensors and tone rings are the most common triggers.
A combined ABS and brake light needs more caution.
Know what still works
When only the ABS light is on, the anti-lock and often the stability-control functions are disabled, but the normal hydraulic brakes typically still operate. The car can usually stop, but it may lock a wheel under hard or slippery braking because the anti-lock intervention is off.
If the red brake warning light is on at the same time, treat it more seriously. That combination can indicate low brake fluid, a hydraulic fault, or a problem that affects normal stopping ability.
Start with wheel-speed data
Most ABS faults are stored as specific codes naming a wheel circuit. A scan tool that reads ABS module codes and live wheel-speed data is far more useful than a generic code reader. Compare all four wheel-speed signals while rolling slowly.
Common causes include a damaged wheel-speed sensor, a corroded or debris-covered tone ring, wiring damage near the suspension, or a wheel bearing that has moved the sensor out of range.
Check the simple stuff too
Low brake fluid, a recent wheel-bearing or hub job, a mismatched spare tire, or a blown ABS fuse can all trigger the light. After brake or suspension work, an unplugged or pinched sensor connector is a frequent cause.
If codes point to the ABS control module or pump motor, that is a more involved repair, but confirm sensors and wiring first because they fail far more often than the module.
Diagnostic checklist
- Note whether the red brake light is also on.
- Check brake-fluid level.
- Scan ABS module codes, not just generic OBD codes.
- Compare all four wheel-speed signals while rolling.
- Inspect sensor wiring and tone rings for damage or debris.
- Verify tire sizes match and no spare is mismatched.
Frequently asked questions
Can I drive with the ABS light on?
Usually yes for a careful trip if only the ABS light is on and braking feels normal, but anti-lock is disabled. If the red brake light is also on, stop and check fluid and brakes first.
Why did the ABS light come on after new tires?
A mismatched tire size or a sensor disturbed during the work can trigger it. Confirm matching tires and that no wheel-speed connector was disturbed.
